Rahall Announces $680K for Senior Nutrition Assistance
3/18/2009
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Nick J. Rahall (D-WV), today announced the availability of $680,092 from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) for senior nutrition assistance through the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).
“Just as they gave and keep giving so much to West Virginia, so must we help to provide for the needs of our senior citizens,” said Rahall. “More than 15 percent of West Virginians are over the age of 65—the third highest percentage of any state in the Nation. With these funds, West Virginia Senior Services will be able to fund nutrition programs for seniors across the state through the Older Americans Act (OAA) funding formula.”
These funds include $455,732 for Congregate Nutrition programs provided at senior centers and other community sites, and $224,360 for Home-Delivered Nutrition programs which deliver sustenance to those at home who can't travel.
“This bill will see that senior citizens in southern West Virginia are taken care of during these lean economic times. It is our responsibility to ensure their care,” said Rahall.
